School Council

Our website is currently being updated and rewritten....
This will take some time, and rather than close it down during that time, we are leaving these pages to give you some sense of our school from day to day, and of its aims and values.

Who is on the school council

There are two children from each school year, except from Reception. They are elected by their peers, but we try to make sure that everyone has a turn. Mrs Kinder represents the staff; Polly Morrow the learning support staff and one of the mealtime assistants comes when possible. The governors are also represented - this year Sue Hadow is a council member.

The school council have been very much involved in drawing up the new anti-bullying policy for the school. If you would like to read it, and its appendices, click here.

When they meet and what they talk about

We try to have two meetings each term. Anyone can ask the school council members to put items on the agenda. At the first meeting we discuss ideas for new projects, or any problems. After this meeting, members go back to their classes and discuss with them ideas from the meeting, and listen to opinions. At the second meeting we agree a plan of action based on their findings.
The school council has a budget of £1000 per year agreed by the governors.

What they have done

The school council have arranged for willow houses to be planted in the field and painted a mural on the wall at the end of the playground.

They have bought a 'happy bench' which is in the quiet area. It is used by children who need to talk to someone about anything that is troubling them, and school council members keep an eye on the bench and go to anyone who sits there.
They have asked for, and chosen curtains for the library; asked to use the library and computer suite at lunchtimes and decided on the sort of rota for using them that would suit everyone; they have discussed and resolved problems in the dining hall at lunch time and have discussed ways of encouraging good behaviour on the school buses. They have devised 'rewards' for politeness and consideration for everyone in school with a marble and certificate system.

Here is the patio that the school council discussed and agreed to spend money on. It is very much enjoyed by everyone in school, although some prefer to read quietly nearby.
