Our next meeting . . . . . . will be at 2.00 pm on Wednesday 24th March in the George Inn. Please come if you can. We need volunteers! Help us save money Recent events F.O.B.S. meetings School Cook Book Easy Fundraising for F.O.B.S. Some thoughts about F.O.B.S. . . We need volunteers! FOBS runs a number of fun-packed fundraising events each term and are in great need of volunteers. The dedicated fundraising efforts of FOBS pays for many things that all the children benefit from - such as the new, improved heated swimming pool and the new PE equipment, which is about to be ordered. If all parents could consider helping it makes things run so much more smoothly. As events happen we will ask for volunteers via the school newsletter, or the Friday reminder, and this website. Please volunteer if you can. If you can help with events please email the school office at admin@blackawton-primary.devon.sch.uk. Don't forget to include your name and phone number. You may find it difficult to spare any time to help at events but you can also help by donating to FOBS. Whether you want to donate or not, please complete this gift aid declaration form and send it in to the school office. You do not need to send a donation with the form; it allows us to reclaim tax on money taken at events as well as donations. Please see this letter for more details. Thank you. The Christmas Fair . . . was held on Friday 4th December in Dittisham Village Hall, from 12.30 to 6.30 pm. The Halloween disco . . . for the children was on Friday 23rd October, 5.00 to 6.30 pm. It raised £120 for funds. Mr Strudwick and team did a fab disco. Mel did a great job in the kitchen. Thanks to all who helped. FOBS and Playgroup Grand Autumn Ball . . . was on Saturday 26th September in the Village Hall. This is an annual joint fundraising event which raised £800 for FOBS. The music was provided by Sax Appeal. There were canapés, champagne on arrival, a grand buffet, and the odd glass of wine (or two . . . !). A fantastic night. Swimming Pool Summer use The school swimming pool was available to be used by families of pupils at the school during the Summer holidays. This was organised, funded and run by FOBS. It was a great sucess, enjoyed by many and fostered a good community spirit. Special thanks to Edwin for coming so often to help and for ensuring the pool was looked after. Proms Night . . . was on Wednesday 1st July. We raised £200 for the school. Thank you to those who attended and all those who took part - especially the surprise act! Midsummer Barn Dance This was on Saturday 27th June in a barn at Collaton Down Farm, Blackawton. It was beautiful evening and was enjoyed by everyone - parents, children, former parents and grandparents. There was a band with a caller to help us with the dances, which were enjoyed by everyone. There was a delicious lamb roast, a barbeque and local beers and other drinks. A very good evening! Thanks to Mr and Mrs Bond and all the many people who helped. Sports Day . . . was held on Thursday 11th June, delayed by a day because of inclement weather. FOBS provided delicious food (salads, pizzas, etc.), beer and wine and helped the kitchen serve hot dogs. The children provided stalls for our entertainment. Children and parents ran the races and a good time was had by all. F.O.B.S. meets several times each term. The meetings are usually held in a local hostelry and are open to everyone - parents, friends, staff, governors and anyone in the community who is interested in the school. Please come along and support us. Our next meeting will be at 2.00 pm on Wednesday 24th March in the George Inn. Here are the minutes of recent F.O.B.S. meetings. 25th February 2010 20th January 2010 AGM, 10th December 2009 10th November 2009 15th October 2009 10th September 2009 I am sure you will remember we were the very proud winners of the Soil Associations Hobart Best School Dinner award at the end of 2006. This award meant a great deal to us all. It was fantastic to be recognised as having the best and healthiest school dinners in the whole country. As a result of this Lorraine Wallis our catering manager even went to Clarence House for lunch and met HRH the Prince of Wales. F.O.B.S. have produced a School Cook Book to commemorate this event and raise funds for the school at the same time. It includes recipes from celebrity and Soil Association President, Jonathon Dimbleby, Riverford and Tideford organic Foods, R D Johns (all three of whom supply food to our kitchens), our own Lorraine Wallis and most importantly both pictures, comments and favourite recipes from you all. School Cook Books are available at a cost of £5.00 per copy. They will make excellent presents for people who have everything, or friends and family, and are a great keepsake for the future. Please print off and fill in the pro forma, and send it into school with your payment of £5 per copy; your cook books will be sent home in your child's book bag. Thank You. Raise funds for F.O.B.S. while you shop! F.O.B.S. have registered with www.easyfundraising.org.uk over the internet, which helps charities to raise money through internet shopping. It is very quick and simple to register yourself with this site. All you need to do is shop through the links on their site, with the high street shops registered, and they will give us a donation of your total shop. Tesco, Toys-r-us and Argos are amongst hundreds of others registered. (Please note that Tesco's only give a donation for your first shop). www.easyfundraising.org.uk is a very easy way for us to raise money for the school. We would be very grateful if you could register with them and shop through their site. With Christmas approaching this is an ideal opportunity to raise extra funds. Please pass this on to any friends and family as they can also help us to raise money. Thank you. . . . from Vicki Maxwell, former chair of governors and chair of F.O.B.S. Rather like the human race, Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs) are one of those groups you join without realising it. Send your child to school and bingo! - you are part of the PTA. And bingo, raffles, jumble sales, quiz nights, craft fayres, sponsored bag packs and barn dances will suddenly form a far larger part of your life than you had previously ever thought possible. F.O.B.S. (Friends of Blackawton School) is our PTA, although, as the name suggests, it is open to anyone interested in the school. In an ideal world, all schools would have bottomless pockets for equipment and facilities. Sadly, this is not yet an ideal world and so much of FOBS's efforts are directed towards fund-raising. Events are organised by a committee of volunteers. Each term we try to have one or two major occasions such as quiz nights or jumble sales, plus some smaller events for the children.
